I received a call from Naysa’s parents wanting to schedule a photo session for her. She was 28 days and they were considering waiting until she was a little older for the session.
My first thoughts were “NO!!!! Don’t wait!”
I don’t ever suggest waiting or delaying. I think newborn portraits are the most important milestone. A baby changes so much and so quickly in that first month, and the fresh out of the womb features fade and change so quickly.
In addition to this, once a baby is past the newborn phase, the 1-3 month time frame is one of the trickiest to photograph. Babies are cute regardless of age, but posing is very limited in the 1-3 month range. They aren’t usually smiling and interacting yet, have delicate and wobbly necks, and are unable to be posed any other way besides on their back. Along with this, they’re typically more alert, awake, and extra wiggly. It doesn’t leave as many options in terms of photographing them. Don’t get me wrong…they’re cute at all phases, but to achieve the curled up and cozy image displayed in my portfolio, the first few weeks are definitely the best!
After a chat and hearing my thoughts, Naysa’s mom and dad decided to move forward with the session right away. They didn’t want to miss out on having her captured as a newborn, and at 28 days, Naysa was getting close to end of the ideal newborn photo window. We chatted about thoughts and ideas, I got the studio ready, and we planned the session for first thing the next morning.
We had lots of cute looks planned for her: lots of pinks, cozy wraps, and animal bonnets. She slept like a dream, and didn’t make any fuss or wake up until the very end. I couldn’t be happier with the gallery of photos we captured, and I’m so glad they’ll forever have these images of her when she was tiny and new.
